This workshop was hosted by Forward Motion, a festival produced by Karen Peterson, dancer, choreographer and artistic director of Karen Peterson & Dancers. The first part of the workshop  began with a dance technique class led by Donald Caputo, choreographer and artistic director of Full Radius, from Atlanta, Georgia. Its main focus was transposing movement from an able body to a seated body. Victoria Marks, from UCLA World Arts & Culture/ Dance, brought to the workshop the idea of choreoportritude. This concept uses tableau as a resource to analyze hierarchical systems reflected in the ways bodies are organized in space. Cameron Basden, Co-Founder & Artistic Director of Miami Dance Hub, led a discussion about what is dance, what is beautiful in dance and why we dance. The event culminated with food and wine as the participants said goodbye until next year's festival.

Reflective understanding through theory and practice

October 28, 2022

Carol Kaminsky MA, BC-DMT, FSOM Dance Program Director

Jorge Morejon PhD FSOM Dance Program Lecturer

Nicole Perry MA…FSOM Dance Program Lecturer

This presentation focused on courses in dance therapy which provide a unique opportunity for students to learn how art-based expression, communication, and engagement is therapeutic for people coping with various developmental, physical, and psychological impairments. Topics in this course examine the concerns relevant to college students, body image, stress reduction, self-care, peer acceptance, and identity. Presenters discussed how lessons bridge understanding of theory and practice in dance therapy with self-awareness. Professors Kaminsky, Morejon and Perry showed videos of students' work which explore personal and cultural assumptions, messages about bodies and embodiment through solo/group movement and personal reflection.

Jazz Improvisation wth HMI at Frost, UM/ Fall 2022

Maria Schneider, a Grammy award winning jazz composer, has been at the University of Miami for a week-long residency with the students in the Henry Mancini Institute at Frost School of Music. She has a love of working with dancers and musicians improvising together to create new spontaneous performance works.  She organized another dance/music improvisation workshop Monday, October 17 from 7:10-8:10pm at the Nancy Green Hall. A similar event took place previously before the pandemic. One musician was paired with one dancer, at times several musicians collaborated with several dancers, each inspiring each other to move and play together.

The videos bellow document the participation of Frost's Professor Jorge Morejón and students Kevin King (oboe) and Andrew Tinch (guitar). The event included other musicians such as Janelle Finton (trumpet), Luca Stine (trumpet), Aron Stornaiulo (dance), Savannah Methner (trumpet), Sam Leviatin (trumpet), Henry Mohr (drums), Sofia Garas (voice) and Jameson Falconer (voice).    The other dancers were Professor Carol Kaminsky, Professor Cristina Leyva, graduate student Esther Baker, students Nicole Kujas and Ashna Vaidyanath.
